Everybody loves cookies! You might turn down a second cookie, but nobody turns down the first! And those of us who consume cannabis tend to be passionate aficionados! So what better combo could there be but weed and cookies? Yes, brownies are also really good, but that is a blog for another time – we are here to talk about cookies, cannabis-infused cookies!
Weed and cookies are such a perfect pairing that there are even several strains of cannabis named after cookies or with cookies in the name of the strain: there is, of course, GSC (formerly known as Girl Scout Cookies), with Thin Mint and Platinum Cookies being variants of GSC; there is also White Caramel Cookie, Animal Cookies, Cookies Kush, Monster Cookies and, yes, there’s even a Cookie Monster weed strain!
Now, most weed cookies recipes call for using cannabutter in place of regular butter in a basic cookie recipe. You can use premade cannabutter from an offline or online dispensary; we have used canna-veggie oil in our weed cooking and it works just fine, too! The canna-veggie oil we have used is from Detroit Fudge Company and has 1600mg of cannabis per 8oz bottle, and retails for $60 from our local dispensary. It makes it kind of easy to dose because there are 16 tbs per bottle, so every tbs is 100mg. But most recipes do specify cannabutter, so we’ll start with some info on making that before we dive into a cookie recipe!
Here is an easy recipe (life is too short for difficult weed recipes) we got from Food Republic (no relation to Weed Republic, by the way):
So You Want To Make Some Cannabutter?
Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cook Time: 1 hour
Level of Difficulty: Easy
Serving Size: ½ cup
½ cup salted butter
¼ ounce cannabis buds, finely ground
1) Melt the butter on low heat in a saucepan. Add the ground buds, and simmer on low heat for 45 minutes, stirring frequently.
2) Strain the butter into a glass dish with a tight-fitting lid. Push the back of a spoon against the plant matter and smash it against the strainer to squeeze out every drop of butter available. When you’re done, discard the plant matter.
Use your cannabutter immediately, or refrigerate or freeze until it is time to use. You can easily scale this recipe up for larger batches of cannabutter. One pound of butter (4 sticks) can absorb 1 ounce of cannabis, but you may want to simmer for up to 60 minutes.
So, that is some quick and easy cannabutter.

Now, you may wonder what kind of weed to use – that depends on what you want to get out of it. A sativa is going to energize you and often give you a mental boost, whereas an indica will ease your aches but sometimes couchlock you! We suspect from the reputation that edible marijuana or medibles have for knocking you on your butt that maybe most are made with indicas. Know your weed (from resources like Weed Republic) and know what the various effects are and then decide from there. Cannabutter recipes rarely specify a type of weed, so in that you are on your own. Go with what works for you or whatever your favorite strain is.

The strain of marijuana you choose will depend on the following things: 1. The effect you want from your edibles, psychoactive or anti-inflammatory. 2. THC / CBD Content, and 3. Flavor.

Try some of the above or any cannabis strain that you are familiar with in your cannabutter.
Okay, now to the cookie recipe – here is what Marijuana Recipes.com calls ‘the best cannabis chocolate-chips cookies:
Prep: 15 minutes
Cooking: 7-11 minutes
You decide if you want (full, half, or quarter strength):
Full Strength: 1 cup (2 sticks) cannabis butter, softened
Half Strength: 1/2-cup (1 stick) cannabis butter, 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
Quarter Strength: 1/4-cup (1/2 stick) cannabis butter, 1 3/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
3/4 cup granulated sugar
3/4 cups packed brown sugar
1-teaspoon vanilla extract
2 large eggs
2 cups (12 oz. package) Milk Chocolate Chips
1 cup chopped nuts (optional)
- Preheat oven to 375° F.
- Combine flour, baking soda and salt in small bowl.
- Beat butter, granulated sugar, brown sugar and vanilla extract in large mixer bowl until creamy.
- Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition.
- Gradually beat in flour mixture.
- Stir in chocolate chips and nuts.
- Drop by rounded tablespoon onto un-greased baking sheets.
- Bake for 7 to 11 minutes or until light brown. *TIP If you like soft cookies remove them while the underside is a very light brown.
- Cool on baking sheets for 2 minutes; remove to wire racks to cool completely.* May be stored in refrigerator for up to 1 week or in freezer for up to 8 weeks.
FOR HIGH ALTITUDE BAKING (5,200 feet and above): Increase flour to 2 1/2 cups. Add 2 teaspoons water with flour and reduce both granulated sugar and brown sugar to 2/3 cup each.

And that’s it – have at it! Make this recipe or some other; really, any cookie recipe can be adapted to make weed cookies if you just add in some cannabutter or substitute the butter in the recipe for cannabutter (or even canna-veggie oil). Enjoy whatever it is that you make, cookies or brownies or whatever, but one piece of advice would be to go slow – medibles can take from a half hour to several hours to kick in, everyone’s digestion is different; and if you overindulge, you could end up feeling a bit ‘overhigh’ or queasy. When we bought our first weed brownie at a dispensary, years ago, we took tiny bites at first and left off for a while to ease into it. But if you’re prudent, and test your tolerance, and do a little research to determine what weed strain you want to use for whatever desired effect you want to achieve, then you’ll do just fine! So, go ahead, have a weed cookie! You know you want to!
