What is a Bong? 

This apparatus is one of the first smoking tools to deviate from the more traditional rolled joint. Generally speaking, the term ‘bong’ refers to any kind of water pipe. There are many different kinds of bongs, varying in size and capacity. Aside from size, they are designed in an assortment of colors and shapes too. Let’s delve into the basic of bong anatomy:

 

How to Smoke a Bong

The Smoke Chamber

This is where the magic happens. The smoke first passes through the water in the bong, and it then travels up into the smoke chamber, awaiting your inhalation. Here’s the thing to remember; the bigger bongs usually have larger smoke chambers which means that you will have more smoke to inhale, i.e., you will have bigger ‘hits.’ If you have had your fair share of bongs already, then you will likely remember a racking cough after taking a big bong, and they are notoriously difficult to clear. So, if you want a smooth experience then in this sense bigger is not always better. Avoid buying the most massive bong that catches your eye. 

 

Bowl, Downstem, Joint

The joints are always angled so that they lead into the water. This then allows for slides, bowls, and downstems to be incorporated into the bong’s structure, allowing for the smoke to travel from the bowl, the downstem and then into the smoke chamber (see below) before being inhaled. The size of the joints are usually 14mm or 18mm, and the angle can be either 90 or 45 degrees. 

 

Carbs

For the bong to work efficiently, some pressure needs to be created within the structure. Bongs have small holes, known as a carb hole, which need to be covered by your fingers as you inhale, thus creating the right amount of pressure within the bong, and the smoke to have a higher degree of concentration. These carbs are usually made above the watermark; otherwise, the water would spill out. If you release your cover on the carbs, you will allow the smoke within the chamber or bowl to escape instead of being inhaled. 

Some bongs, however, do not have carbs but have slides in their place. These slides simply need to be removed before inhalation. 

Those are the top three type of ‘accessories’ that you will find on a bong. However, you will notice that some contemporary designs will have additional features like catchers, percs, and diffuse stems that can enhance the overall bong smoking experience. 

 

What’s the difference between micro bongs, or tiny bongs, and regular bongs?

Both of these bongs have their pros and cons. While you may be thinking that the difference between the two is simply the size, think again. It is precisely because of this difference in size that they have several defining differences. 
 

Pros of a small bong:

Cons of small bong:
