11 Best Ceramic Nails | Pure CBD Dabs And Wax

A row of ceramic dab nails, image courtesy of Glassics Co on Instagram

Dab nails, much like bong bowl pieces or weed bowls on hand pipes, are where the ganja goodies go – you know, your wax, weed, or shatter – those things that are going to get you high. Nails, just like the weed bowls for your bong, are made of various materials, so you have glass, quartz, titanium and ceramic nails. Ceramic nails, as you probably noted from the title, are what we’re here to talk about.

If you’re wondering how to use a ceramic nail, or how to dab with one, it isn’t too complicated: just use a hand torch to heat up the nail, apply some cannabis concentrate or hash oil to the nail, let it sublimate, and inhale the concentrated vapor through your rig’s mouthpiece. You dab from a ceramic nail pretty much like you would hit off any other nail. Ceramic dab nails are popular because they tend to be fairly inexpensive, don’t mar the taste of your dab like titanium nails do by leaving a metallic aftertaste, and ceramic dab nails endure heating and reheating well – their only downside is that they do break easily if dropped. So, you want to be careful to not drop your ceramic nail – if you can do that, then you’re assured of some pure, flavorful hits and a ceramic dab nail that will last and last through bang after bang!

Before we launch into our featured ceramic banger nails – which is why we’re all gathered here today – there are a few things you need to keep firmly in mind. First, opposites attract, at least when it comes to dab nails or bong bowls; your parts have to be male and female – for example: if you have a 14mm ceramic nail, female-ended, then you better have a male joint connection on your bong for it to fit together with – or an adapter. And size matters, at least with regard to your ceramic dab nail (or any-material dab nail): common sizes are 10mm ceramic nail, 14 mm ceramic nail and 18mm ceramic nail. So, if you know the appropriate genders for your bong joint connection and your dab nail, and know their matching sizes – or have some sort of adapter for size or gender, then you can find the dab nail that’s right for you and your rig.

The only other thing is whether you want a domed or domeless ceramic nail - domed nails come with a spherical, globe-shaped dome that fits snugly over your dab nail – ceramic or otherwise - so when you heat up your nail and dab your shatter wax on, all you gotta do is flip or place your dome over the nail. What the dome does is reduce heat loss, thus keeping your concentrate at the ideal temperature for maximum vaporization. You want maximum vaporization! However, the upside to a domeless nail is that you can have a bigger nail head, or bowl, size and thus bigger dabs – or even attach a two-headed nail! Also, domeless nails can use carb caps to go on top of the nail after your dab has been placed and torched; they act much like a dome by containing the heat in the nail and restricting air flow – stronger, better-tasting hits that way!

For more on all kinds of dab nails – titanium or ceramic nails or quartz – see our blog on '17 Best Dab Rig Nails'! Finding the best dab rig nails isn\'t easy, but this list will certainly help you narrow it down.

Alright then, grab your dab wands and concentrated weed wax and follow us to see what some of the best ceramic dab nails there are to choose from!

Hive Ceramics 10mm Domeless Nail - $49.99

Hive Ceramics 10mm domeless nail

You’re gonna find as you read through this blog posting, and if you do any searching for yourself on the Internet’s weed wide web that, like, 99.9% of the ceramic nails out there are domeless – that’s just the way it is. You can buy carb caps for them, of course - and they do largely the same thing as a dome, so there is that!

Understanding that, here is another domeless ceramic dab nail for your consideration – this one from Hive Ceramics, distinctive for its beehive logo etched on the base (personally, we think it looks more like a swirled ice cream cone, but it’s supposed to be a bee hive).

This porcelain-like piece is a 10mm female-ended ceramic dab nail that fits over the 10mm male joint on your dab rig, water pipe or bong. It is crafted from the finest medical-grade ceramic and has a large dish bowl with a raised center tube for sublimely sublimating a hefty chunk of weed wax or other cannabis concentrate.

Should you find yourself shopping for a non-corrosive and all-natural ceramic dab nail with a 10mm female joint, then you couldn’t do much better than this large-bowled domeless piece; sure, it’s got a steeper price at $49.99 (or 4 payments of $12.50), but for superior heat retention, smooth toking flavor and long-term re-usability – especially using it over an extended period of time where your investment really pays off – it is well worth it!

What we love!

710 Whip - Analog Electric Nail (E-Nail) Set W/Ceramic Coil & Nail - $100.00

710 Whip Analog Electric Nail Set With Ceramic Coil and Nail

We’re gonna start with something really different from your average, run-of-the-mill ceramic dab nail - because that’s just how we roll – an analog electronic ceramic dab nail! There's 'taking-your-smoking-to the-next-level' – and we’re just getting started!

Granted, an e-nail is far more pricey than a regular ceramic nail, but electronic ceramic dab nails allow you to precisely control the temperature of your dab nail with the touch of a button. All you have to do is turn the nail on, adjust the temperature setting, and wait for the unit to reach the desired temperature before dabbing a virtually unlimited number of times without needing to worry at all about whether you have the right temp or have a consistent temperature for reliably smooth hitting.

Traditional ceramic dab nails need hand torches to heat them. Butane hand torches can be somewhat dangerous – ‘fire, bad’ and all  – plus it’s hard, sometimes, to maintain an even temperature with an open flame versus digital electronics.

The 710 Whip Analog Electric Nail is super-easy to use, heats up quickly (as high as 750°F/398°C) and gives you terpy, tasty tokes with no metallic nor butane aftertaste. The E-Nail comes with a 3D-printed casing and a control knob that audibly clicks and lights up, so you know whether the E-Nail is on or off – which is important to be aware of to prevent burning your fingers accidentally. You only ever want to cook your wax, not your own digits!

Included with the E-Nail kit is:

  • An analog power cord with a temperature range up to a maximum of 750°F/398°C
  • A flat ceramic heater
  • 1 ceramic dab nail head
  • 1 ceramic dab nail nut
  • 4 ceramic dab nail joints (14mm male, 14mm female, 18mm male, 18mm female)
  • 1 ceramic carb cap to cover your dab nail
  • A drawstring for securing your wire
  • An instruction manual – just like Ikea furniture

The manufacturer of the 710 Whip Analog Electric Nail is so sure of its reliability and quality that it comes with a 1-Year Craftsman Guarantee that starts from the date it is delivered to you; and the ceramic heater unit has a 30-day warranty against defects. If they’re that sure, then you can rest easy that you have a reliable e-nail for your dab rig and that you have invested your $100 wisely!

What we love!

  • Allows you to precisely control the temperature of your dab nail with the touch of a button

  • Torch-less hitting

Domeless Ceramic Dab Nails

10mm Domeless Ceramic Nail - $5.00

10mm Domeless Ceramic Nail

This food-grade, 2 1/8-inch long ceramic dab nail is female, because it’s got a flared skirt at the bottom – that isn’t being sexist, that’s just what it is: a skirt that fits over a male dab rig joint.

Being ceramic means that it heats slower than metal pieces like titanium nails, but that it also retains that heat longer. Seasoning ceramic nails, if you’ve ever heard of that, means heating your ceramic dabber nail enough times to achieve a consistent temperature duration; when you do that, flavors become much more pronounced because you are correctly activating the terpenes, and the effects become stronger as you release the cannabinoids from your shatter or wax. Consistency is key to tastier, smoother hits with your ceramic dab nail!

10mm is pretty small, and female dab nail ends that size generally fit onto what are called micro or nano joints, and those are most common on smaller dab rigs and bongs, or water pipes.

This one has a $9.99 MSRP, manufacture suggested retail price; order one for your little 10mm compatible rig and enjoy richer, longer-lasting pulls!

What we love!

  • 2 1/8-inch food-grade ceramic nail
  • Female-ended nail fits 10mm male joint
  • Can be seasoned or heated repeatedly to achieve a consistent temperature duration – producing more flavorful hits
  • 10mm female end fits onto what are called micro or nano joints, most common on smaller dab rigs and bongs, or water pipes

ERRL Gear Adjustable Ceramic Concentrate Nail 10mm

How would you feel about a fully adjustable, heat-resistant, 10mm ceramic dab concentrate nail, made in the US by ERRL Gear? You’d feel pretty good, if you like the pure, flavorful hits of ceramic nails coupled with a threaded shaft with a disc for height adjustment! How could you not love it?

Ceramic nails are noted for consistent heat retention, so it’s possible to take more than one dab from just heating it once.

This ceramic dab nail fits securely over a 10mm male joint on your dab rig. Then you dial it up or down to the height you want, apply your torch to heat it (after maybe seasoning it like we described above with the 10mm Domeless Ceramic Nail), add some dabbing wax and inhale the vapor! SMOKEA Ceramic 14mm 18mm Male Domeless Nail, image from Glassics Co on Instagram

(SMOKEA Ceramic 14mm 18mm Male Domeless Nail, image from Glassics Co on Instagram)

This particular SMOKEA Ceramic 2-inch domeless nail can fit either 14mm or 18mm female joints on your dabber. Having a ceramic dab nail that fits a couple of different-sized rig connection joints is pretty darned handy – it saves you having to have a converter for either sized rig, and it means you can use the same ceramic banger nail in two different rigs, even if they have differing joint sizes! Slick is what that is!

Ceramic nails look rather simple: they’re kinda bland, they’re white, nothing flashy – but ceramic nails are pretty popular for dab rig smoking down for a very good reason: ceramic is a high-quality material that retains heat longer than titanium nails, providing much smoother hits without any metallic aftertaste. Tinny taste may also mean potentially harmful chemicals in the smoke or vapor, so you want to avoid that for your health’s, as well as your taste’s, sake!

If you want a versatile domeless ceramic nail that fits 14mm or 18mm female joints, then you can pick up this little number for $20.00, or 5 interest-free payments of $4.00 – and that includes free shipping! As we said, pretty slick!

What we love!

  • 2-inch domeless nail, ceramic
  • Fits either 14mm or 18mm female joints
  • Retains heat longer than titanium nails
  • Provides much smoother hits than a titanium nail without any metallic aftertaste

SMOKEA Ceramic 14mm/18mm Female Domeless Nail - $20.00

SMOKEA Ceramic 14mm-18mm Female Domeless Nail

This ceramic dab nail is pretty much the same deal as the Ceramic 14mm/18mm Male Domeless Nail listed above – but female-ended instead, that means this one can fit either 14mm or 18mm male joints on your dab rig. The only other way you could do that, with the previous male nail, would be to use an adapter. Hopefully that makes sense – remember, the connections always have to be opposite. A female nail will connect to a male joint and vice versa.

If you’re not sure which you have, a male dab rig or female, one way to tell is… no, you don’t check its genitals… the way you can tell if your bong or rig is ‘male’ is by whether or not you put your nail onto the joint or into the joint - if you put the nail onto the joint, then you have a male rig and need a female nail. Conversely, with a ‘female’ dab rig, you would insert the male-ended nail into the joint or downstem… okay, it’s kind of like genitals.

Anyway, the same things are true for this female nail as were true of the male-ended ceramic nail: both are domeless, both are made from high-quality ceramic that retains heat better than titanium nails, and both give you much smoother hits without any metallic aftertaste. This one is slightly longer at 2 ½ inches over 2 inches, but beyond that and the gender of the connector, they are virtually the same.

This one can also be had for $20.00, or 5 interest-free payments of $4.00 – and that includes free shipping, too!

What we love!

  • 2 ½-inch domeless nail, ceramic
  • Fits either 14mm or 18mm male joints
  • Retains heat longer than titanium nails
  • Provides much smoother hits than a titanium nail without any metallic aftertaste

ERRL Gear - Ceramic Direct Inject Domeless Nail - 14.5mm & 18.8mm - $8.00

ERRL Gear Ceramic Direct-Inject Domeless Nail 14_5mm 18_8mm

The term direct inject might be somewhat confusing, but there’s no need to fear because an explanation is here! Direct inject merely refers to a male nail that can fit into a male joint, which is perfectly natural and nothing to feel weird about – it happens in nature and human society all the time! The end of the dab nail is narrow enough that it fits into your dab rig’s downstem as opposed to fitting onto, or over, it like a female-ended nail usually would. Normally, if a nail goes into the joint it’s a male-end connector into a female joint opening, but direct inject nails are just narrow tubes and so they can go male-to-male. We need to talk about these things so we can end the stigma and be open to all kinds of nails connecting to all kinds of joints.

Elsewise, other than a different-but-still-okay connection, direct inject domeless ceramic nails are just like any other ceramic dab nails: they can withstand repeated high torching temperatures, they retain heat long enough that it’s possible to take more than one dab from just heating it once, and they produce flavorful hits free from any metallic aftertaste or toxins!

ERRL Gear’s 5.4 cm/2.1 inch-long Ceramic Direct Inject Domeless Nail fits any and all bongs and banger rigs with either a 14.5mm or 18.8mm male joint. You won’t need a vapor dome because it is designed to sublimate the cannabis wax vapor just fine without.

ERRL makes their products in the USA and sells them worldwide; they can sell you one if the Ceramic Direct Inject Domeless Nail sounds like what you want to see become a part of your rig set – if you’re forward-thinking enough, then it will run you $8.00.

What we love!

  • 5.4 cm/2.1 inches long

  • Retains heat long enough that it’s possible to take more than one dab from just heating it once

14mm/19mm Sidecar Ceramic Nail - $14.99

14mm 19mm Sidecar Ceramic Nail

The whole idea behind a sidecar design ceramic nail is to keep both your rig and your face free from flaming doom! The torch fire from your handheld lighter could extend several inches; so, depending on the configuration of your dab rig, that can put the mouthpiece and, consequently your face, perilously close to searing hot plasma – adding an extension, or sidecar, to the ceramic dab nail gives it a bit more removal from the mouthpiece or the body of the bong, protecting your beloved rig and the front of your noggin!

While this is another domeless nail – something that tends to be true of most dab nails, ceramic or otherwise – you can always pick up a carb cap that will keep the sublimating vapors from leaking out into the air, forcing them down into the pipe, through the main water chamber, out the mouthpiece and into you!

This ceramic banger nail is universally female-ended, which by now you ought to know means that it will fit over a 14mm or 19mm male joint. Universal connectors generally give you the option of using the same nail between two or more bongs of differing sizes without having to use a size adapter. You might have to use a gender adapter, though, if you have only female-jointed downstems on your dab rigs.

Just $24.99 – or 4 automatic, interest-free payments of $6.25 - buys you a highly heat-resistant ceramic dab nail with a sidecar arm that helps shield your rig, your hands and your face from the flame of your torch, leaving that intense fire to heat just the nail to sublimate the potent pot concentrate in the bowl. Worry-free weediness is never, ever a bad thing!

What we love!

  • Female-ended domeless nail
  • Made from quality heat-resistant ceramic
  • Universally fits over a 14mm or 19mm male joint
  • Sidecar design ceramic nail keeps both your rig and your face away from torch fire
  • Just $24.99 – or 4 automatic, interest-free payments of $6.25

Female 14/18 Ceramic Honey Bucket Nail - $34.99

Female 14-18 Ceramic Honey Bucket Nail

This Female 14/18 Ceramic Honey Bucket Nail was also featured in our '17 Best Dab Rig Nails - No Matter What Your Budget'! blog; we re-featured it here to give you another domed ceramic nail option.

Sure, a Honey Bucket nail is a little more complicated option than just a straight-up domeless nail, but the swing arm functions similarly to a sidecar nail: just heat up the end of the domed attachment while the torch is safely away from your dab rig's joint; then, as soon as you’ve heated it to the temp you want, swing the arm back inside the dab bowl. Use a dab stick to press your hash oil or concentrates onto the heated swing attachment - vapor gathers in the main chamber and is channeled down into the body of your rig. What better way to enjoy a hit of some of your terpene honey wax than with a Honey Bucket nail?

This sweet little bucket for your dabbing honey is hewn from durable white ceramic, and is compatible with male dab rigs with joint sizes of either 14mm or 18mm. Anything else, and you’d need an adapter.

Should you decide that you want a taste of the dabs from this honey of a bucket, then you can pick one up for $34.99 – and that includes free discreet shipping, the delivery driver will be disguised as a mailman.

What we love!

  • Swing arm attachment keeps your torch safely away from your dab rig's joint – and you
  • Made from durable white ceramic
  • Female nail compatible with male dab rigs with joint sizes of either 14mm or 18mm

Ceramic Universal 14.5mm and 18.8mm Honey Bucket with Swing Arm - $42.00

Ceramic Universal 14_5mm and 18_8mm Honey Bucket with Swing Arm

A Honey Bucket swing arm ceramic dab nail is a little more complex than a domeless nail, but it’s not like rocket science either: all you have to do is torch the end of the domed swing arm with the flame while it’s well away from you and your dab rig, swinging the arm back inside the bowl to allow the heat to sublimate your cannabis concentrate into vapor.

The arm also helps trap the vapor, keeping it from drifting out of the bowl, and channeling it down into the downstem to begin the cooling and filtering journey through your rig’s water chamber, up the mouthpiece and ever closer to your eager mouth and lungs! You lose far less cannabis-infused vapor that way!

This piece is a great ceramic nail because of its medical-grade heat retention, and because the swing arm that helps keep your hand torch and molten wax away from your hands and face also acts as a vapor dome that directs the flow of the vapor into your dab rig. The Ceramic Universal Swing Arm Honey Bucket can fit both 14.5mm and 18.8mm joints, and you can choose either male or female connectors.

The cost of this Ceramic Universal 14.5mm and 18.8mm Honey Bucket with Swing Arm is $42.00 and that includes free shipping; keep an eye out for their Flash Sales, which they have regularly - you might be able to pick this one up for less!

What we love!

  • Swing arm traps the vapor, keeping it from drifting out of the bowl, channeling it through the downstem into your rig’s water chamber and beyond

A Bunch Of Ceramic Nails, image from Retro Relics on Instagram
(A bunch of ceramic nails, image from Retro Relics on Instagram)

Summary

Ceramic nails aren’t as prevalent or commonplace as a glass nail, quartz or titanium nails – but they are great for heat retention and tolerating repeated use; quartz nails can crack with frequent torching and titanium nails can leave a metallic aftertaste, raising concerns about chemicals leeching into your vapor when you hit. Yes, ceramic nails can break if you drop them, but so can a kitten and you probably aren’t shy about picking one up; with reasonable precautions – being careful to not drop your ceramic dab nail – you can get many, many, many reuses from medical-grade ceramic pieces.

If you aren’t sure yet how to use dab rigs with nails ceramic, then we’ll run through it with you – bookmark this page, if you want, so you can refer back to it later. First, your ceramic nail goes where the weed bowl would go on a bong – swapping out a nail for the bowl makes your water pipe a dab rig. Things to keep in mind include the size and gender of the connections between the nail connector and the dab banger rig’s downstem joint, which comes in both male and female shapes. Almost always – save for a direct inject nail, which we listed above – you have to have an opposite gender between nail and rig joint; so, a 14mm ceramic nail with a female end would fit over a male downstem joint – or, if it were a male nail, then you’d need to make sure you have a female joint. Likewise, the joint size must match: a 10mm ceramic nail (a size usually denoting a small or mini bong) would need a 10mm joint to securely connect, a 14mm ceramic nail would need a 14mm joint, and an 18mm ceramic nail would need an 18mm joint. There are adapters for size, gender and sometimes even both.

Once you have your nail and joint securely connected, then use either a propane or butane torch to heat your nail - big propane torches can get the ceramic dabbing nail heated up within 45 to 50 seconds, whereas smaller butane torches take longer - up to two minutes to heat ceramic dab nails. Whenever heating a ceramic nail, move the torch around evenly to prevent cracking. Ceramic banger nails don’t glow red like quartz nails or titanium dab nails do when heated so you’ll have to rely on timing your torching. As with all dab nails - whether a quartz, titanium, or ceramic nail - it’s important to let the nail cool down long enough after torching it to avoid spontaneous concentrate combustion (you don’t want your cannabinoids vanishing in a poof); cool-down can vary from 15 to 35 seconds or more, the bigger the nail the longer it takes. You’ll have to experiment a little here.

Once your nail has reached optimum temperature, use your dab tool (like a big, hooked toothpick) to add a piece of resin, wax, shatter, or crumble to the nail dish, or bowl - as you do so you can start to inhale so you pull the vapor through the rig, not letting any dab vapor go to waste. For best results, especially with domeless ceramic nails, take a carb cap and put it atop your banger to trap the vapor as you inhale. Then it’s lather, rinse, repeat; do the same kinda thing every time for each hit or bang.

Now, if you wanna know how to clean a ceramic nail, usually excess wax or oils will burn off with the hand torch, but occasionally you may want to soak your ceramic nails overnight in 91% isopropyl alcohol and then scrub them off with a little soap and water the next day before using them again. Don’t forget to wash and rinse the alcohol off before you re-torch your nail or you might flash burn off your eyebrows – alcohol is flammable!

Some say, unlike quartz or titanium dab nails, there’s no reason for ‘seasoning’ or preheating a ceramic nail, they are good to go right out of the package! There’s no ‘factory taste’ to a medical-grade ceramic nail – so no need to season it. Others disagree, and advocate seasoning ceramic nails, as we detailed above.

So, now you know it all – how to use a ceramic nail, how to match ceramic dab nail size and gender with your dab rig joint, how a quartz nail compares to a ceramic, how a titanium or ceramic nail differ, and how to clean a ceramic nail. We’ve showcased quite a few for your consideration, so determine your dab nail joint size, gender, and once you have ordered and received your ceramic dab nail, you can take your dab wand in hand, heat the piece, put some wax on your ceramic banger nail and breath in the tasty vapor free from nasty, metallic taste! With medical-grade materials, you can be secure in the knowledge that you can hit from that ceramic dab nail again and again – sometimes with just one torching! Ceramic nails are pretty sweet!
